The Night Away

I took another crack at Contact Improvisation last night, going dancing with Sue. The second try was a lot better than the first (if only inasmuch as I stayed on my feet for the entire session), though I’m clearly no dancer. Still, it was a fantastic experience.

Leaving the dance studio in Central Square, we saw the moon, large and low in the sky, commingling with the skyscrapers of far-off downtown Boston.

Saying you aren’t a dancer from two sessions of Contact Improvisation is like saying you aren’t a musician because you picked up a banjo and jammed with a Bluegrass band twice. Or something like that. ;)

Now that all depends on the quality of my playing, yes?

No, not at all. Are you saying that just because you can’t immediately play banjo in a Bluegrass band you could never play any other instrument or any other kind of music?

I agree with you. The point I’d like to make is that there is some line, based on proficiency, after which one call call oneself a ______ without reservations. I might very well get there with dancing, but for me I haven’t crossed that line yet.

And, besides, you can be judged, or judge yourself to be a “bad” dancer and still be a dancer, or a bad banjoist (is that a word?) and yet still be a banjoist.
