Don’t Fret

I’ve been playing a lot of guitar lately. It feels good, and I am improving, albeit slowly in parts, as muscles won’t magically get stronger or faster overnight. But there is a growing comfort with the instrument, and an understanding of what needs to be done. I’m playing etudes. In a huge step, I’ve considered buying a metronome (my last didn’t make it through grad school).

I’m sure you’re better than me by now :) I’m not sure if it will be your cup of tea but Joe Satriani’s Surfing With the Alien is my favorite all-guitar solo album (especially noteworthy are “Circles” and “Satch Boogie”). It’s definitely a classic, and the sheet music is likely still on the shelf at your local music store. Learning to play those songs (the parts I put the time into learning, anyway) pushed me pretty hard. Steve Vai’s Passion and Warfare is #2.
